NSW Chinese community leaders have been recognised for their volunteer work, community service and achievement at the 2010 Premier’s Chinese Community Service Awards.

Premier Kristina Keneally and Minister for Citizenship, John Hatzistergos, today announced the award winners at an official ceremony at NSW Government House.


Young Chinese Volunteer Award

This award recognises the valuable role of young volunteers and is awarded to a young person (under 25 years of age) for distinguished voluntary community service. The Young Volunteer Award encourages new leaders in the Chinese community as they continue the legacy of civic commitment established over two hundred years of the Chinese community in NSW.

Miss Mimi Zou

Miss Mimi Zou

Miss Mimi Zou is recognised for her dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life for many disadvantaged young Australians. Mimi has promoted cultural harmony among young people through her involvement with the Canterbury Youth Council and other projects.

She has been involved with a number of government boards, committees and forums where she has successfully represented and advocated on behalf of young people and Australians from different cultural backgrounds.

Mimi’s leadership of the local youth council has helped to promote greater participation by young people in local community activities. This has been clearly evident in the success of the events since her involvement.

For over a decade, Mimi has striven to make a positive difference to the most disadvantaged Australians in the community through her voluntary work and her concern and compassion for the wellbeing of others.


Victor Chang Community Service Award

The award is named in honour of the pioneering Sydney heart surgeon Dr Victor Chang, who helped establish the National Heart Transplant Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital. This award honours excellence in community citizenship. The award is given to an individual in appreciation of significant and innovative contribution in general community service to address a particular community welfare need in the Chinese community.

Mr. Wee Teck Teo

Mr. Wee Teck TeoMr Wee Teck Teo is recognised for his enormous voluntary work in helping the Chinese communities in Sydney to develop and grow.

Wee Teck’s dedicated voluntary work as the Principal of the Sydney Chinese School for 35 years has enabled an estimated 20,000 students to attend the school and learn Chinese language, culture and values. He is considered to be the pioneer of Chinese community language teaching in Sydney.

Wee Teck’s active participation at the management level across many community organisations has been instrumental in the development of various welfare services, including child-care and aged-care for the Chinese community. He was a driving force in establishing the Elderly Australian Chinese Homes Cooperative Ltd in 1987 and Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS) in 1981.

Wee Teck served as a member of the Management Committee of the Chinese Youth League, the CYL, for 20 years. The CYL is now recognised as a leading organisation in the Chinese Community in NSW fostering mutual understanding, promoting Chinese culture and encouraging sporting activities in the Chinese community.


Jack Wong Sue Award for Voluntary Service Beyond the Chinese Community

The Jack Wong Sue Award is awarded to a person or organisation within the Chinese community that, like decorated RAAF serviceman Jack Wong Sue in World War II, excels in voluntary commitment to wider society.

Dr Anthony Pun OAM

Dr Anthony Pun OAMDr Anthony Pun is recognised for his tireless efforts in fighting racism and promoting multiculturalism. He is a great promoter of Australia Day and its importance in regional NSW.

Dr Pun is the founding National President of the Chinese Community Council in Australia which provides advocacy for Chinese Australians on a national level. In his capacity as former Chair of the Ethnic Communities Council of New South Wales, he has represented the interests of multicultural communities to the media and to the State Government.

Since 2000, Dr Pun has initiated and promoted Australia Day celebrations in the Chinese community through the Chinese Australian Celebration Committee and has been an Australia Day Ambassador since 2003. Dr Pun has helped to spread the Australia Day message far and wide ensuring the concept of multiculturalism becomes more readily accepted in regional areas and, in turn, promoting social harmony and cohesion for all Australians.

Dr Pun has been instrumental in providing a voice for multicultural communities incombating racism. For several decades he has been a great public advocate for multiculturalism in New South Wales and around the nation.


Quong Tart Lifetime Achievement Award in Community Service

This award honours an individual who has provided outstanding volunteer service over an extended period of time.

Mr. William Chiu

Mr. William ChiuMr. William Chiu is recognised for his continuous service in many organisations in the Sydney Chinese community and his dedication to the promotion of friendly relationships between Australia and China.

He has been involved in many fields of activities including trade, culture, education, health, humanitarian services, religion and research.

Since 2003, William has been part of the “Eyes on China” project which has sent medical teams to perform thousands of free cataract operations in remote Chinese provinces. Working through the Australia Council for the Peaceful Promotion of the Reunification of China, he actively raised awareness and conducted gala fund raising activities involving all levels of government for this wonderful work.

William is the State Patron of the NSW branch of the Australia China Business Council and has been a member of the NSW Government Asia Business Advisory Council since 2003.

His efforts in the trade sector have greatly assisted in identifying business opportunities and promoting trade relations between Australia and China. He is also an active fundraiser, convening campaigns to raise money for disasters including the Southern China floods, the Sichuan Earthquake and the Taiwan Typhoon.
