The People of New South Wales (2001)

Cover of The People of New South Wales

Note: A more recent version of the People of NSW is available.

This site is a major compilation of statistics on people's origins, the languages they speak, their English proficiency and the religions they practice.

By following the links below you will be presented with information that has been organised into a number of sections.

Sections 1 and 2 are a series of overview tables and graphics that highlight a number of important demographic and social issues for Australia and New South Wales. This includes identifying our emerging communities, finding out where different groups of migrants have chosen to settle and the differing countries of origin for people sharing the same ancestry.

The remaining sections comprise a detailed statistical profile for every Local Government Area in NSW. At a minimum these profiles contain a list of summary indicators for the area plus statistics on birthplace, religion and ancestry. For the more urbanised Local Government Areas these statistics are supplemented with statistics on language, birthplace by age and English proficiency by age.

Finally, an important feature of this data and one that makes it particularly useful for planners, community leaders and service-providers is that unlike most other Census products the information presented is derived from usual residence data rather than place of enumeration data.
