Premier Kristina Keneally today announced the NSW Government will appoint four new Commissioners to the Community Relations Commission – to reflect the changing composition of the culturally diverse community of NSW.

This will bring the total number of Community Relations Commissioners to 15 - including a Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, 11 Commissioners and two youth Commissioners.

The Community Relations Commission is responsible for providing advice on multicultural issues and supporting people from a variety of different backgrounds.“

The NSW Government rightly believes that differences in our cultural and spiritual backgrounds strengthen and enliven our great State,” Ms Keneally said.

“Appointing a further four Commissioners will allow more culturally diverse communities to have a representative on the Commission and will provide a voice for emerging multicultural groups in our community.”

The expansion of the Community Relations Commission follows the NSW Government’s elevation of the Commission to the Department of Justice and Attorney General earlier this year.

Minister for Citizenship, John Hatzistergos said: “Appointing four new Commissioners will allow the Community Relations Commission to be even more representative of the multicultural community we are fortunate to experience here in NSW.”

“We are seeking people from a range of backgrounds to bring their life experiences and understanding of key issues affecting communities to the role of Commissioner.”

Chair of the Commission, Dr Stepan Kerkyasharian said: “The four additional Commissioners will attend community events and engage in constructive consultation with multicultural groups in NSW.”

“This input from the ground level up allows the NSW Government to continue to make real progress on important issues, such as settlement and mainstream service delivery, across our State.”

Nominations for the new positions are now open and applications close Friday, 2 February 2011.
